What is Reflexology?

Whilst the art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, in 1913 Dr William Fitzgerald introduced it to the West as 'zone therapy'. He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone and in the 1930's Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is now known as reflexology. Many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals are now recognising reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.

How does Reflexology work?

Reflexology works on the premise that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body. By using reflex techniques, stimulating a gentle pressure to specific points on the feet the body releases tension throughout the body.

What is Maternity Reflexology?

Reflexology is found to be effective for stress related ailments, anxiety, low energy, back & neck pain, headaches, migraines and boosting the immune system. In pregnancy it has been found to support the body by helping with fatigue, morning sickness and general stress and tension.

Can Reflexology help during the later stages of pregnancy?

Towards the later stages of pregnancy the treatment is extremely relaxing and beneficial, helping with swollen feet and hands and achy legs. Our emotions can also be "read" through our feet helping to bring sub-conscious thoughts into focus and allowing a calmer perspective before labour.

How is acupressure and reflexology used during late pregnancy and labour?

A reflexology treatment during late pregnancy will often incorporate the use acupressure points to stimulate and encourage spontaneous labour. Simple techniques can also be easily taught to partners to use during the birth process to support the body’s natural release of endorphins (pain relieving hormones) and encourage a more efficient labour with consistent contractions.

Weekly sessions of pre-birth reflexology and acupressure from week 37 can prepare the pelvis and cervix for a more efficient labour. For more details of our pre-birth packages click here.

Our At Home post natal reflexology service is now available - ideal for all mums especially in the early days immediately after your baby's birth.
