Breast is absolutely best for newborn babies. Research shows that being breastfed in the early months after birth has a huge positive impact on the baby's health for the rest of their life with just one day of breastfeeding making a difference to a baby's health by stabilising their blood sugars, protecting their gut and providing natural antibodies against disease.
But breastfeeding is a learned skill that each Mother and her baby have to master together and isn't always second nature or easy so unfortunately our experience tells us that that many women who stop breastfeeding in the first six weeks are stopping before they want to. The most common reasons given are a lack of accurate or consistent information and ongoing support.
At Me & My Baby we believe that if mothers know the real benefits, they would feel it was worth starting to breastfeed even if they are not sure about how long they will continue and we also provide the ongoing support required to keep it going when it does become tough. Our pre-birth workshop is aimed at building confidence and understanding about feeding a new baby - knowing how the whole process works and how to avoid the pitfalls - virtually everyone can successfully feed their baby with enough advice and support.
This session sets women up to succeed with breastfeeding and make it work for you.
The session is followed up by telephone support and a home visit if required.
